Originally used as stables, next as a war shelter, and followed by the latest transformation as a print shop, this large warehouse interior situated in Barcelona, Spain, has withstood the true test of time and many changes. Designers Alberto Rovira + Benito Escat have given this warehouse one other purpose by transforming it into a cool urban apartment which is everything contemporary and chic. The designers worked on this project with Agnès Blanch + Elina Vila of the local interiors firm Minim. This firm is famous for designing contemporary interiors which usually retain their original architecture.

Barn Conversion Home by Specht Harpman

The original barn, set on a Connecticut dairy farm, was partially destroyed by fire. Specht Harpman came in and completely rebuilt it, using polished concrete floors with custom woodwork and exposed maple framing, creating an interior that has a lot of natural light makes for a pleasant and healthy environment. In order to remain contextual with the other structures on the site, the interior was completely transformed to create a free volume on the ground floor where the open plan area connects the kitchen living & dining area. The warm color of the cherry maple gives it a real sense of the country, and the concrete shows off its modern style, along with a simple fitted kitchen, minimalist yet trendy furniture and a contemporary fireplace in the living area.

Farmhouse Renovation by Nils Finne

Nils Finne, a well known architect from Seattle has done a modern renovation of a farmhouse in Fall City, Washington. The Fall City Renovation started with a farmhouse on a hillside overlooking the beautiful Snoqualmie River valley, some thirty miles east of Seattle. On the central floor, the walls between the kitchen and dining room were removed, and a twenty five feet long addition to the kitchen provided a continuous glass ribbon around the limestone kitchen counter. The interior has a feeling similar to a fire look-out tower in the national forest. The second part of the renovation focused on a master bathroom. A brand new addition created a continuous glass wall, with breathtaking views of the valley.

Tamir Addadi from UK has designed a modern staircase in order to replace an awkward ladder which before that was used in order to provide easy access to the apartment space on the top floor of a Victorian home in London. A big problem was to create a staircase for the narrow space of 55 by 35 inches. The architect found it crucial to come up with a good solution which will help integrate a couple of differently created floors. The wood clad apartment with its simple contemporary lines and the carpeted Victorian lower floor featuring engraved banisters – without disturbing any of their unique characters. The architect wanted to achieve that by designing 3 separate and simple elements which perfectly function together as a staircase – on the other hand remain abstract in shape, and also may be seen as furniture pieces which have been placed in the space – and not a fixed feature of either the upper or lower floor.
