Modern House Extension by Vamp

This box covered with crossed sticks, which resembles a contemporary and chic bird’s nest shape, is an extension of a one-story home. This home is a project of Vamp and was originally built in 1999. Once it glows in the dark it looks surreal and sci-fi. This modern house extension overlooks the backyard pool through wide tinted windows. Inside, the interior is black & white and furnished in a modern way. The bird’s nest style exterior guarantees this fun house extension get a lot of attention.

These days the majority of people in urban areas live in homes like this, made to fulfill the needs of city expansion and growth. In case you were to stay true to that architecture for unit expansion, you would simply get more unattractive brick work. We like the juxtaposition; the big square box jutting out from the rear featuring floor to ceiling glass windows. Try to think how it would look lit up at night, just like a light-box. We are completely in love with the full size folding glass doors which open the lower level kitchen to the garden designing a unified space. Creative way to bring the outside in!

This modern house extension is a project of Paul McAneary Architects. The project’s brief was to extend and remodel the 3-bedroom 2-storey house which was in a bad state and in need of serious refurbishment and modernization. The client asked for a modern design and practicality and they expressed the wish to be able to perceive the garden as a continuation of the domestic space rather than the outdoor. Architects expanded and reconfigured the existing space by creating a big open-plan: the concept driving the whole design is a 30 degrees twist which allows perceptive and physical overlapping between the exterior and interior spaces, between the kitchen and garden thresholds; therefore while at the sink one feels the garden is behind you. This whole concept is manifest in the details of the floating external deck and the faceted zinc facade, being cut back to a fine angled edge. The garden becomes an important part of the living space.
